LONDON DECO FLATS

Dorset House       1935

Architect

T P Bennett and Joseph Emberton

History

The flats sit in courtyard formation above an underground parking garage, ground floor filling station, restaurant and 16 shops. Reliefs are by Eric Gill. The developer was Claude Leigh. The building occupies a complete street block, with full site coverage on ground floor, apart from a shallow entrance courtyard from Gloucester Place. The 4 circulation cores open on to central spine corridors leading to individual flats on each level. There are also tenants' access stairs front and rear.  1,2 and 3 bedroom flats were provided, those on the first floor having access to roof terraces, and those on the 8th and 9th floor set back behind sundecks. The practical skills of T P Bennett and Son ensured that the intricacies of separating service areas from tenants' corridors and public rooms was solved, and the design contribution of Joseph Emberton to the public areas raised the aesthetic quality well above the norms of most contemporary commercial developments.
